NEW 4G technology installed on a payphone near the cathedral has been praised by the Winchester MP.
Steve Brine MP met with Vanessa Higham, from Vodafone’s government affairs team, to see the impact of new 4G technology installed on the phone in Market Street.
The miniature 4G technology unit has been fitted to add extra Vodafone mobile coverage and capacity for customers and businesses in the city.
As the country comes out of lockdown and returns to work, the demand for data on the move is expected to grow again.
As a result, Vodafone has added the clever technology on the roof of the payphone, boosting Vodafone 4G signal within a 200-metre coverage radius.
This will mean more customers can use their mobile devices to stream HD videos, download maps and access websites within seconds.
Steve said: “I’d like to thank Vodafone for showing me the payphone technology and am grateful they have chosen Winchester to participate in this programme. I know this technology will support the ever-increasing demand for mobile connectivity as the city and the cathedral start to receive the first visitors of spring and the surrounding streets become busier.”
The activity is part of Vodafone’s latest network modernisation programme to improve both 4G and 5G for UK customers.
The programme will see the retirement of the old Vodafone 3G network in 2023, with coverage replaced by strengthened 4G and 5G services, meaning customers can access a more reliable connection.
