Massive 5G mast at major roundabout among latest plans for Plymouth

A huge new 5G monopole is set to be installed at one of Plymouth’s busiest roundabouts.

Plans this week have been submitted for the installation of a 20m monopole, as well as ancillary apertures and equipment cabinets, at the Derriford Roundabout on Tavistock Road.

The scheme would see the removal of the existing 14.7m monopole to make way for this new and bigger telecoms pole, which would be located around 10m away from the current location.

Hutchison 3G UK Limited are the applicants behind the scheme – who operate under the global Three brand, who are the fourth-largest mobile network operator in the United Kingdom.

Details with the application say it would be for a 5G mast and are part of the plans to ensure all community are supported with high-quality, reliable digital connectivity and that they can benefit from faster economic growth and greater social inclusion.

The proposals for the new 5G mast at the Derriford Roundabout

The latest list of plans also include improvements at the club house of the Tamar River Sailing Club, for a scheme which would see a small extension outside the main entrance to the clubhouse, to provide an external access store for boating equipment, alongside a canopy over the entrance for weather protection when entering the building.

An upgraded Race Office located on the roof of the building, provision of solar PV cells to roof to offset energy usage and reduce carbon footprint of building, and refurbishment of conservatory roof adjacent to entrance to reduce heat loss from within, and reduce the operational energy consumption of the building and reduce associated carbon footprint, are also part of the proposals.

A statement with the application says: “The proposals being put forward here are to ensure the continued popular appeal of this important social and sporting river and sea access hub. There are few such clubs remaining in the city, and notably in this area. Also, the broad appeal of sailing is evidenced in the club’s membership group.

“Part of the above proposed improvements include upgraded shower and changing room facilities to incorporate dedicated cubicles in order to meet current RYA and the latest welfare / safeguarding provisions.

“Providing quality facilities is essential to the continued appeal of the club and particularly its appeal to young sailors. It is hoped that the provision of these improvements to the clubhouse and associated facilities is understood by all interested parties to be hugely important to the local and city-wide community alike.”

Plymouth City Council will determine the fate of the applications at a later date.
