TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A local broadcasting legend and former 13abc anchor has died.
Gordon Ward, who came to Toledo in the late 50′s, died Tuesday at the age of 96. He was also affectionately known as “Skip.”
His career in broadcasting began when he was an announcer for a Sandusky radio station. He later moved to Cleveland and announced for NBC. Soon after, he moved to Toledo and worked as an anchor for WTOL where he met his wife, Constance Harlan.
He started at 13abc, at the time known as WSPD-TV, an NBC affiliate, in 1967. He retired in 1987 after 20 years with Channel 13.
In 2016, Ward was honored at the regional Emmys when he was inducted in the Gold Circle — which recognizes broadcasters who have worked in the industry for 50 or more years. 13abc’s Diane Larson, who co-anchored the noon newscast with Ward, sat down with him in 2016 to reflect on his accomplishments. You can watch a clip of that video here.
Ward was recently hospitalized after a fall.
