University of Birmingham Scientists Find Faster Speeds than 5G
Scientists from the University of Birmingham, UK, were the ones that revealed the new technology and suggested that it cannot be accessed with the technology’s current capabilities. The “beam-steering” technology, as detailed by the scientists, is capable of speeds up to 10gbps.
According to the story by Sci Tech Daily, the feature comes with much higher bandwidth which could be good for speed, but it also means that it won’t be compatible with just any device. As of press time, the most advanced technology available is still 5G technology which is slowly rolling out to the general public.
Researchers Say New Technology can Increase Efficiency of Data Transmission Beyond 5G
The researchers from Birmingham stated that the new technology is capable of increasing “the efficiency of data transmission for beyond 5G,” which opens up a large range of mobile communications frequencies that remain inaccessible to what current technologies allow.
As per experimental results shown at the 3rd International Union of Radio Science, the device is capable of providing wide-angle beam steering continuously. This means a moving mobile phone user can be tracked just like how a satellite works.
High Speeds Require a Mechanically Steered Antenna
The University of Birmingham School of Engineering researchers were able to find the vast difference when it came to the efficiency of data transmission for other technologies like 5G and 6G.
The high speeds, however, were found only feasible when using mechanically steered antenna solutions. Dr. James Churm, Dr. Muhammad Rabbani, and Head of the Metamaterials Engineering Laboratory, Professor Alexandros Feresidis, were the ones that developed the beam-steering technology.
Device Found to be the Size of an iPhone
The device is reportedly the size of the iPhone and is made from metal sheets with micro metered holes. The team is still developing and testing out the higher frequencies prototype and its antenna is designed to control the radio wave deflection.
As per Dr. Churm, their technology is reportedly capable of reaching 94% efficiency at 300 GHz. The technology can be adapted for different fields, including vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicular radar, vehicle-to-infrastructure, and satellite communications, as detailed by Mirage News.

Adoption to Higher Internet Speeds
The University of Birmingham Enterprise has already filed a patent application for the beam-steering antenna tach. They are also looking for potential industry partners in terms of licensing, collaboration, and product development.
With the majority still using 4G technology as 5G technology still being adapted, the introduction of an even faster technology when it comes to mobile connection could help boost the speed if introduced into a mainstream setting.
